Empathy has a huge upside. Researchers Peter Paul Zurek and Herbert Scheithauer explain that empathy helps interpersonal decision making; facilitates ethical decision making and moral judgments; enhances short-term subjective well-being; strengthens relational bonds; allows people to better understand how others see them; and enhances prosocial and altruistic behavior. \n— Brené Brown\, Atlas of the Heart\, pgs. 168 & 171 \nSpiritual Point of View \nThis week\, you delve into the active expression of empathy—deeply connecting with another in a way that honors both truth and presence. \nRemember that there is no separation between you and Spirit. Every being\, no matter how different they may appear\, is a manifestation of the same Life. To understand someone is not to analyze\, correct\, or fix them\, but to recognize them as a complete expression of the Divine. \nErnest Holmes offers this key: “The thought of God must be the cause of everything that really exists.” (The Science of Mind\, p. 69). \nListening beyond words allows you to perceive that Divine Cause in the heart of another. You do not need to agree with someone to understand them. When you listen with the soul\, you open a sacred space where Spirit can work freely—without your interference\, without your agenda\, and without barriers. \nEmpathy\, in expansion\, becomes the conscious willingness to honor the truth of the other\, sustaining it with love. Understanding ceases to be a mental technique and becomes a spiritual practice of reverent presence. \nEmpathy begins with stillness—the discipline of quieting your internal noise so you can truly hear another person. You cannot listen deeply when you’re already composing your reply. Instead\, you create a sacred container by saying inwardly: “Let me see the world through your eyes.” \nEmpathy is a marriage of curiosity and humility. When you let go of the need to be right or to fix someone\, you enter the heart-space where real understanding unfolds. People don’t need your solutions—they need your presence. \nYour grounded\, conscious presence is the channel through which Love expresses. In addition to all the normal fears associated with giving a filmed\, eighteen minute talk in front of an intensely successful and high-expectation audience\, I was the closing speaker for the entire event. For three days she sat and watched some of the most amazing and provocative talks she’d ever seen… When she finally walked on the stage the first thing she did was make eye contact with several people in the audience. She asked the stage managers to bring up the houselights so she could see people. She needed to feel connected. Simply seeing people as people rather than ‘the audience’ reminded her that the challenges that scare her–like being naked–scare everyone else. She thinks that’s why empathy can be conveyed without speaking a word–it just takes looking into someone’s eyes and seeing yourself reflected back (Brown\, Brené. Daring Greatly: How the Courage to be Vulnerable Transforms the Way we Live\, Parent\, and Lead. Penguin Random House\, 2012\, pp. 39-40). \nSpiritual Point of View \nEmpathy doesn’t arise from obligation or emotional over-identification. It flows naturally when you awaken to a consciousness of Oneness. As Ernest Holmes teaches\, because God exists in you\, you are able to recognize God in others. Spirit is the medium through which you become aware of yourself\, of others\, and of life itself. From this awareness\, empathy becomes an inner state—not something you force\, but something you are. \nWhen you stay connected to your true self\, you don’t feel the need to fix someone else’s pain. You simply show up—present\, grounded\, and without judgment. This kind of empathy doesn’t drain you\, because it isn’t rooted in control or urgency. It’s an authentic expression of spiritual alignment. \nEmpathy is a practice of slowing down your inner noise so you can truly hear another’s truth. When you listen to understand rather than to respond\, you create safety. As you grow in self-awareness\, you can witness another’s pain without taking it on.
